Character Characteristics

This week in both reading and writing, we will be really delving into “character.”  You’ve been in your book groups for about a week, and should have a pretty good idea about some of the problems that your character faces in the book that you are reading.  For this post, please respond to the following question:

Please write about the problems that your character faces in your book.  You should discuss at least two issues that they are having in the story.  Please make sure that you both write the name of the book that you are reading as well as the name of the main character that you are analyzing.

I am reading How To Steal A Dog by Barbara O’ Connor. The main character’s name is Georgina.

    1. One of the problems Georgina is faces is that she lives in a house with a tar paper roof that is caved in and covered in rotting leaves and pine needles, prickly-looking bushes growing thick and dense across the front, kudzu vines rapped along the chimney and roof, that smelled damp and moldy, with a floor littered with leaves and acorns, a ply-wood covered window, mice or rats or something had chewed through the fabric to the foam stuffing beneath, and A LOT more.

    2. Georgina wanted to steel a dog to make money for her family, but she can’t find a place to keep to dog.

I am reading Brendan Buckley’s Universe and Everything in It. The main character is Brendan Buckley.

    1) Brendan’s main problem is that his grandfather (Grandpa Clem) has just died and now Brendan is feeling really sad.

    2) Bendan also has never met his other grandfather because his family says he is “gone.” Brendan doesn’t understand what this means.

My book is Brendan Buckley’s Universe and Everything in it. The main character is Brendan Buckley. Two problems are that his Grandpa Clem died and he used to go fishing with him. Now he has to face not going fishing with his grandpa. The second is that little kids don’t understand why he and his dad and his grandparents are brown and his mom is white.

The book I am reading is called ‘Night of the Twisters’. The main character is a boy named Dan. Here are two of the problems he has:

    1) His baby brother, Ryan. Dan really wants things to be the way they were before Ryan was born, just him, his mom, and his dad. Now instead of his Dad staying and making jokes at the dinner table, his Dad wolfes down his dinner and heads for the door. His mom is very tired all the time, not the laughing self she used to be. Dan finds himslef folding diappers and doing dishes instead of playing with his best friend, Arthur.

    2) He has to go to his Aunt Goldie’s summer camp (you can’t actully call it a ‘camp’) every single summer. He has to learn how to dance (ugh), do arts and crafts (sometimes fun), and the only thing good about it is Arthur is there with him. The bad thing is Arthur is thinking of quitting. His mom always says, “It’s the least we can do.” But, a summer camp with dancing? No way.

Those are some of Dan’s problems.

Your response is very well done. As EC11 said, this is like reading the back of a book cover. It is very descriptive and well written! Great job, hope your other classmates will follow this model.

The name of of the the book I am reading is called Yang The Youngest and his Terrible Ear. The main character is Yang Yingtao.

Some of the problems Yingtao faces are:
    1. Both of Yingtao’s parents are musicians and they both want him to play the violin but he has a terrible ear for music (that means you can’t hear the tone) and doesn’t like playing the violin.

    2. His best friend Matthew (his only friend) loves playing the violin and is really good at it and Yingto is not. this makes Yingtao feel left out.

I’m reading Night of the Twisters by Ivy Ruckman. The main character is Daniel Hatch (Dan). Here are some of the problems he encounters:

    1. Dan is forced to go to his Aunt Goldie’s summer camp. He has no interest in this camp because all Aunt Goldie has them do is arts and crafts in her basement. The one good thing about the camp is that his best friend Arthur is there with him but even he is thinking about quitting (help!)

    2. Another problem Dan has is his younger brother Ryan. Because Ryan is so disruptive, Dan wishes his life was like before Ryan was born. His family seemed more happy and less stressed. Now his mother doesn’t dress up for work anymore, his dad doesn’t joke with Arthur at the dinner table, and Dan and the rest of the family have to listen to his brother’s awful screaming.

    3. A tornado is coming. These are some of the signs that definitely mean trouble: the radio went dead with a guy shouting “tornado alert, tornado alert”, the TV flashing CD…CD…CD(Civil Defense Emergency), the lights flickering, sucking noises were coming from the drains, and the tornado siren was blaring.

My book is Holes and one of the problems Stanley has is he shouldn’t have been sent to Camp Green Lake because he was walking home from school one day and shoes fell off a freeway bridge and hit him on the head just then a cop came by and asked him what he was carrying and it turned out they were Clyde Livingstons shoes a famous baseball player and the cop thought he had stole them. Then he was given the choice of jail or Camp Green Lake and of course he chose the camp.

Another problem Stanley has is he has never really done work so now he has to dig a hole that is 5 feet all around every day for 10 months.

I read How to Steal a Dog.The main character is Georgina. Here are some of the problems she faces:
    1) Georgina was so excited she was moving into a house instead of the dirty old car. But it turns out that the new house is a mess. The floor was covered with leaves and acorns as if it was the carpet. Rodents must have chewed the couch because there was little holes in the couch. A couple of empty cans of pork and beans sat next to the stove. When she turned on the tap no water came out. Not even a drip. What a disaster that house would be.

    2) Another problem Georgina faces is that she wants to try to steal a dog so that she can get rewarded $500.00 for a new place to live but she has no place to keep a new dog so that her mom won’t see it.

Those are some of the problems Georgina faces in the book.

I love how you described her house. I could really see the leaves, the chewed couch, and I could feel how put down she was when instead of a nice house replacing a disgusting old car, it turns out the car would have been better than the house. Another thing I loved is that you said the amount of the reward for the dog so I could feel how much she needed to steal that dog so she could buy a new house.

I’m reading Night of the Twisters by Ivy Ruckman. The main character in our book is named Dan Hatch, and here are some of the problems he faces :

    1) One problem Dan faces is his baby brother, Ryan. For eleven years, they were a small, happy family. John Hatch, Linda Hatch, and Dan Hatch. And it could have been that way forever : without Ryan’s awful screaming and bawling.

    2) Another problem Dan has is his Aunt Goldie’s torturous summer camp that he has to go to every summer. His mom says “it’s the least we can do “ but a “camp” with dancing, arts, and crafts? No way! At least his best friend Arthur is there but to Dan’s dismay, Arthur is thinking of leaving Aunt Goldie’s camp in her basement. Can it get any worse?

The book I am reading is called How to Steal a Dog. The main chactor is Georgina. Here are some of the problems she faces…
1)The first problem is that her dad went away and left them with nothing but 3 roles of quaters and a mayonnaise jar full of wadded-up dollar bills. They got kicked out of their aparment and now live in their car.
    2) The second problem is that they got enough money to move into a house but her good feelings about that went away at the first sight of it…

I am reading Holes. The main character is Stanley Yelnats
but everybody calls him Caveman. Here are some problems that he faces.

Stanley lives in a small apartment in Texas but it always smells really bad because his dad is trying to find a way to recycle old shoes. Anyway, since is dad has not been very successful with his shoe theory there family does not have a lot of money. Stanley is a pretty chubby kid and has no friends at all. One day he found himself walking home from school and some shoes fell from the sky and hit him on the head. The shoes were a large pair of nice cleats. That got Stanley very excited because he could have solved all of his dads problems with just some lucky shoes that fell from the sky. But I guess it wasn’t just that easy because the police caught him just at that moment. The police man told him that he had apparently stolen that pair of Clyde Livingston’s shoes. After the court, Stanley had a choice of either jail or Cam Green Lake. Stanley chose Camp Green Lake and now he is not sure if he made the right choice. At least maybe he’ll actually make some new friends. What could go wrong? Everything.

I am reading Night of the Twisters by Ivy Ruckman.
The main characters name is Dan Hatch.
Two of the problems he faces in the book are…

    1) His little brother Ryan–every thing was absolutely, positively perfect until little Ryan came along. All those nice peaceful meals the family shared are shattered by Ryan’s yelling and screaming. Even the cat’s dinner has been disrupted ever since they spotted her licking food off from Ryan’s mouth.

    2) Aunt Goldies summer camp–it may be heaven for some people, but it was a nightmare for Dan and Arthur. At camp she’s taught them how to deliver hundreds of fliers (without even being paid) on their own time, hacky sack, tennis, boys ballet, backgammon, and bridge that’s so boring you want to tear your skin off.
As if both of these problems weren’t enough, the title of the book, Night of the Twisters, suggests things will get worse.

The book I am reading is Night of The Twister and the main character is Dan.
1.One of the problems Dan faces is his brother Ryan. His brother Ryan made Dan’s mom and dad depressed. He made his mom quit work (which she liked) and made her stop wearing her cheerful work outfit. He also made Dan’s dinners with his family quiet which were once a time of conversation and noises of laughter as his dad made jokes. He also gets all the attention but not the attention of “your so cute” but the attention of “oh stop crying”.
2.Another problem is that a tornado is coming! Signs that a tornado is coming and it is bad are:the lights are out, the radio guy said “Tornado Tornado”, the T.V says CD which means Civil Defense Emergency, a siren from somewhere in town is sounding, the toilets and sinks are making a sucking sound which is because the tornado is destroying the water pipes, and last but not least Dan is waking up his brother which he would only do for a real emergency.

I am reading HOLES by LOUIS SACHAR and the mane character is Stanley Yelnats. Here are some of Stanley Yelnats problems.

    1) Stanley has been sent to Camp Green Lake because he was found guilty of stealing when he was innocent. While Stanley was walking home from school he walked under an overpass and when he did shoes fell from the sky. He then started to run home. Then a police officer asked him “why are you running”. Stanley showed the office the shoes. It turns out that they were Clyde Livingston’s shoes and they had been stolen. Stanley was brought to court and was found guilty. The judge said Stanley could go to Camp Green Lake or jail. Stanley’s parents chose Camp Green Lake.

    2) While at Camp Green Lake, he is has to dig one hole per day that is 5 feet deep and 5 feet wide at every angle. On Stanleys’s first hole he gets lots of blisters on his hands. And, when he gets up to do his second hole he aches all over so it will be even harder to dig his hole.

Her mother works two jobs trying to make money to buy a house. In the meantime they live in a car.
