Post Five: Now What Do You Think?

To be done after you finish reading the book

On page 132, Nolan witnesses Mr. Bixby being mean to his wife and son.  Discuss the saying:  children learn what they live.  How does this saying relate to Bubba and his cruel, bullying behavior?

I didn’t think once during the entire story that Bubba learned being a bully from his dad. I was pretty sure that he learned it from someone else, but not his dad. Since Bubba’s dad was mean to him and his mom Bubba’s whole life (probably), Bubba could pass it on to people at school. I wonder what will happen when Bubba grows up and gets married and has children. I wonder who taught being mean to Bubba’s dad?

You make a really good point about how bulling can spread. I like your question at the end, it makes you keep on thinking after you are done reading the post itself. Great job!

I was also wondering who had been mean to his dad. Great job Ec12!

I bet Bubba will turn out just like his dad because it is like a cycle.

EC12, maybe his dad had been mean to him and it just runs in the family. I don’t know, but great job on that part, and every other part of your post!

The saying children learn what they live is very true to this situation. This relates to Bubba’s family because Bubba has been around is father since he was born and if his father was mean and a bully, Bubba would have grown up learning to be mean and a bully. The saying children learn what they live means that if you grow up seeing people being mean you will think that is what to do (but it is not), but if a child grows up with people being nice to them, you will know that that is the right thing to do (and this time it is).

This situation shows why Bubba pushes people around and says mean things to people like his Dad says “I said, get inside!” he probably yells when he takes money or lunch money, “give me your lunch money!” so that’s where he got that from. His Dad does mean things, so he does mean things because he is used to mean things. His Dad also shoves his Mom around, and Bubba shoves people around.

I agree with you, EC18. Bubba’s father does also bully Bubba’s mother. I like how you include phrases from the book, like things Bubba and his father said in the story.

I like your thinking on Bubba learning to take lunch money from his dad, and I bet it’s true. Great job EC18!

Children learn what they live means that if they experienced being bullied they’ll bully other people. The saying relates to Bubba because he is bullied by his dad and he bullies other people so he’s taking his father’s footsteps.

  7. This saying relates to Bubba’s cruel, bullying behavior because he gets the cruel, bullying behavior from his dad.
Usually my parents say that bullies might have such a miserable life (Bubba has a miserable life because his dad bullies his family) that they take it out on others. They might also get the bullying from other people.

I think that the saying: children learn what they live, means that kids like us learn from their parents and siblings because that is what we see, hear, and live. In other words, it means that as we grow up, we kind of learn to be like our parents and family. Bubba and his mean behavior can definitely relate to this saying because his dad is really mean to him and I bet Bubba feels like what Nolan and the other kids that were bullied feel like when he bullies them. So Bubba is learning what he is living outside of school but nobody really knows that his dad is really mean to him and that he has a pretty harsh family life.

This saying relates to Bubba’s act by passing on bullying. I got that by reading that Mr.Bixby is mean to his son so Bubba treats others the way he gets treated. As my mom always says” Treats people the way you want to be treated.” Bubba is just treating people the way that he is treated.

The saying children learn when they live relates to Bubba’s bullying behavior because he is learning the way to act from his dad and his dad is obviously not being a good role model. It is kind of like it will be next year, we will be the oldest grade in the whole school and we have to be good role models to the younger kids because whatever way we are acting they are going to think it is the right thing to do.

I think that if you grow up getting bossed around and having mean parents, you become mean. Bubba had to deal with bullying which made him feel put down, so he became a bully himself. This is sort of what happened to Nolan too. He felt bad that Bubba was picking on him, so he started picking on Bubba. I agree that children learn what they live.

The saying, “children learn what they live” has a lot to do with Bubba Bixby. He has lived a life of his father constantly bullying him and grew up to take after his father by being a bully himself. I that that his father has been mean to Bubba his whole life so Bubba decided that if his father could be a bully then why not him? Bubba is mean but his father is meaner so that is how he learned to be a bully, from his father. Young children often do what their parents do and that is what Bubba must’ve decided. At the beginning of the book you think that Bubba is a really mean bully but not until the end of the book do you realize what Bubba has experienced and how it has changed him dramatically.

“Children learn what they live” means that if a child see’s his parents being mean to each other the child will think that it is okay to act like that. I think it relates to the book and Bubba’s cruel bullying behavior because Bubba see’s his dad being mean to his mom and thinks it is normal to talk like that and he does it to everybody at school.

I never thought that Bubba learned it from his father. I think this saying does relate to Bubba’s cruel behavior because we do learn from our parents and teachers maybe even our siblings. I would feel really bad if my dad was bulling me. So no one know’s that Bubba’s dad is bulling him, they think that he is mean on his own but Bubba doesn’t really know that being mean is a bad thing to do.

I agree with you. I would’ve never guessed that, that was the reason that Bubba had decided to become a bully. At the beginning of the book nobody would’ve thought that this was the reason Bubba is now a Bully. Maybe Bubba’s grandfather was a bully too!

The phrase “you learn what you live” means that whatever way you get treated in life you will learn to act that way. So if you are treated very well then you will learn to be nice to other people, but if you are treated badly then you may learn to be a bully to other people because that is how you think you are supposed to act. This relates to Bubba because his Dad is mean to him, so Bubba is mean to everybody else in school because he doesn’t know it’s wrong.

I think Bubba really would of turned out to be a nice guy but his father was mean to him. When his father was mean to him he couldn’t do anything to his father so he expressed his feeling on other kids. Bubba also might think since his father bullies him he can bully other people.

I think the saying: “children learn what they live” relates to Bubba because Bubba learns from his father and if his father is mean and Bubba learns from him, then that explains why Bubba is a big, mean, bully.

It isn’t Bubba’s fault that he’s a bully; it’s his dad’s fault. The saying, “children learn what they live” means that if your parent bullies you, like Bubba was, you learn how to be a bully too. I think the saying makes perfect sense, and I wonder if Nolan realized that fact when he witnessed Bubba Bixby being bullied by his dad.

I THINK BECAUSE IF HIS PARENTS ARE MEAN TO HIM IT IS LIKELY THAT THERE SON OR DAUGHTER WILL BE A BULLY. AND THAT IS WHY I THINK BUBBA IS A BULLY.

I didn’t think that Bubba’s dad was the source of Bubba’s bad behavior. I thought that Bubba had learned from somewhere else, but not his family. I think that Bubba’s dad had been brought up by mean parents, so he was learning from his parents, who learned from their parents (etc) So this proves that saying true.

Well, to answer your question, they probably picked it up from someone else (like someone at school) or maybe just decided ‘I want to be mean or something like that.

  21. Posted by EC22 on May 27, 2011 at 12:05 am

I think that bubba being mean to other people because of his dad mean is true because he might think it is okay to act that way or he might be getting out his anger on other people. I think that bubba is trying to get out his anger because if you are mad at someone and you take it out on the person you got mad at you get a bigger fight so he knows at home if he stands up against his father at home he would get beaten so at school he is trying to let out all of his anger on other people.

Children learn what they live means sometimes younger people look up to older people and do what they do. Bubba’s dad is mean to him, so Bubba is mean to other people at school. Bubba learned to be a bully from his dad.

I guess I was right but now I can really see how parents have a major effect on kids lives. They’re huge role models and shape how kid behave act and react. I guess Bubba’s father did not give any of guidance or leadership and was very mean, hence Bubba is mean.
